Shaft sleeve RFQ: dimensions, surfaces and references

A shaft sleeve can look simple while having several important interfaces. A clear enquiry identifies where it sits, which surfaces matter and what document controls the manufactured part. This is more useful than asking a supplier to reproduce an outside diameter and overall length from a photograph.

Identify the sleeve’s role

Include the pump and assembly reference, part number and location. KSB describes shaft protecting sleeves as a means of protecting the shaft against wear or corrosion in the sealing area. Use the actual assembly documentation to establish whether that description applies to the requested part.

Collect the dimensional definition

Supply the bore, outside diameters, shoulders, grooves and overall length with their datums and tolerances. Mark working surfaces and any specified finish or treatment. A marked-up drawing is preferable to a list of disconnected dimensions because it shows where each requirement applies.

Separate sample measurements from design requirements

Suppose an existing sleeve is scored in one area. A measurement from that region records the present condition, not necessarily the intended new-part size. Keep an “observed” column separate from an “approved target” column, and record who resolves the difference. Do the same for uncertain material identification.

Define the commercial package

Specify quantity, acceptance records, packaging and destination. Ask the reviewer to state any assumptions about the drawing, material condition or surface treatment. If an initial sample is required before the balance quantity, identify that approval stage and its effect on timing.

Questions buyers ask

Is a nominal bore enough?

No. Supply the approved tolerance and reference arrangement where available; otherwise raise the missing definition for review.

Does a similar appearance establish interchangeability?

No. The dimensional, material and assembly requirements still need to match the approved specification.
